I love horror, and Silvia Moreno-Garcia has clearly studied it extensively. Her craft of the characters and setting builds tension immediately, and she keeps it threaded tightly throughout the narrative. I quite genuinely couldn’t put it down, and I know I let out several gasps as I learned new information. This horror reminded me why I love the classics like Shelley and Poe, when things get so inhuman and so sick that it’s impossible to look away, in case you might miss something—the most human instinct of all.
Graphic: Body horror and Racism
Moderate: Violence
