Orphia and Eurydicius by Elyse John

4.0

4 Stars. This book had beautiful writing, the language was poetic and I thought it did justice to the story of Orpheus. That being said, the style of the writing made it quite a dense book which required a lot of attention. The story flowed very cohesively as it wove all these myths together. I particularly liked that the relationship between Orphia and Eurydicius subverted the traditional relationship of that time, and how this was used throughout the book to critique the treatment and expectations of women. Orphia was a champion of women in her poetry, and I think that the verses that John writes were magical. I appreciated the bi and queer representation throughout the book.
