„Who are you?“ - „Shannon, […] like the river“ - „Well, Shannon like the river“ (p. 42)

Shannon Lynch had eyes the color of midnight blue that wouldn‘t stay […] out of my head. (p. 107)

„I just … needed more time with her, you know? Like, it wasn‘t enough. I needed more…“ - „More? […] More of what, Johnny?“ - „More of her. […] It‘s all more when it comes to her.“ (p. 467)

„I got what I wanted.“ -
„And what was that?“ - „You. […] I got you. […] I‘m gonna keep you.“ - „Okay. […] You can keep me.“ (p. 765)

„Whose hurting you baby? […] I‘ll fix it.“ - „It‘s a secret.“ - „I won‘t tell.“ - „My father.“ (p. 768)

I curled up as small as I could and clenched my eyes shut.
You‘re back in that room with Johnny.
He‘s telling you he loves you.
You‘re okay.
Kick after kick after kick.
[…]
My body wasn‘t hurting as much. I wasn‘t feeling the kicks or blows now. I couldn‘t hear the screams of my brothers. Everything was warm. Warm and light.
You‘re dying. (p. 784)

This book wrecked me. It was beautiful and cruel and so much more. Haven‘t cried over a book in a long time. It‘s earth shattering. To see into a world no one talks about, a world I am so glad to have never had to experience, a world that is so essential to talk about.
