Daughters of Darkness by L.J. Smith

As a simple young adult book, it was pleasantly enjoyable for a while. I like some common tropes & the main character had her own dreams and desires, making her more relatable. However, as I approached the 2nd half of the book, I was concerned about how the book was going to wrap up. So much had been set up that it was going to be difficult to have a good conclusion. True to form, the conclusion took place over only 40 pages, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

The entire book set up the premise that the Night World’s laws are unavoidable and that it would take some serious thinking to get around it. By the conclusion, they have a simple “Oh we’ll just do XYZ!” which took the bite out of a previously serious issue.

Last but not least- I know that being soulmates is a trope, one I can enjoy- but having the pair fall completely in love in 2 days felt very forced and I don’t feel like we got to know Ash at all.

In conclusion: It had promise as a nice young adult paranormal romance, but it was far too short to reach its potential. Not the worst crime of a book, but I won’t be rereading it due to that ending.
