Like all of McCarthy’s work, All the Pretty Horses is compelling in a way that lingers long after the book is finished. He died this summer, so I returned to his work with this read. He was one of the greats, certainly - there is some witchcraft in his ability to create a full, rich, well formed character out of dialogue that often consists of grunts and one word answers. His blending of humor and darkness was masterful, and his language deep and rich. I found portions of AtPH heavy-handed, but maybe I’m just not grasping the genius. A solid read overall, one that transported me to another time and place in the way only the best books can.
