How to Kill Men and Get Away With It by Katy Brent

4.0

“He doesn’t look like a monster though. But they don’t do they? Otherwise they’d never get the opportunity to be monsters.”

Picked this up in the hopes it would be in a similar vein to ‘How to Kill Your Family’ by Bella Mackie & whilst I don’t think it’s as good it’s definitely a fun read.

I really liked the different subplots which helped give a bit of variety & build tension, especially the stalker one which would fade away before injecting a bit more mystery & threat (although WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU KEEP KILLING IF YOU KNEW SOMEONE ELSE KNEW & VERY LIKELY HAD PROOF) Not sure how necessary the romance one was although I guess it ticked the ‘not all men’ box.

Writing about social media is always a bit risky because it moves so fast that social criticism about it can oftentimes be outdated by a book’s publishing & I think this can be seen in some of the elements here. Plus it’s pretty heavy handed in the beginning of the book although this tapers off as it goes on.

I also hate the ‘I’m not like other girls’ trope of the MC where it  feels a bit rich (unintentional pun) of her to criticise her friends & social circle when she benefits from the same privilege & does little to change anything. Although I have seen some other reviews pointing out it’s likely the author’s intention to make her unlikeable.

Finally, I’m a bit on the fence about the overall message of this book especially the ending (the epilogue made me *extremely* worried up until the last sentence)

If you liked this book you’ll probably like boy parts by Eliza Clark.
