Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca

4.0

Ok ok I’ve sat with this book for a while and talked extensively with friends and feel like my thoughts are together. This book truly was shocking and deeply sad. It was a quick punch to the gut and needs to be consumed in one sitting.

Detailed recap so avoid unless you’ve already read:
Things have gotten worse since we last spoke is the story of a lonely woman who finds companionship in an online chat room. Our main character connects with Zoe. Quickly finding herself financially dependent on her new, anonymous friend. Told completely though IMs and emails, this novella explores how desperation can lead a human to commit heinous acts in pursuit of acceptance.

This book does not lack any gore or graphic scenes. The hardest to read had to be the little christ vignette which detailed the gruesome events of a teenager violently crucifying his infant brother. The worst thing I think I’ve ever read in my life has to be the eating and hosting of the tapeworm. In a final attempt at motherhood, our main character willingly consumes a parasitic tapeworm. She carries it to term in a placebo pregnancy to simulate carrying life and giving her life purpose.
