One Last Thing Before I Go by Jonathan Tropper

5.0

I wanted, at first, to hate this book. Mostly because I was predisposed to dislike the main character as he initially appeared as a pitiful, lost, burnt out middle aged man who relied on the women in his life to inspire him, give him direction, and provide motivation to transform himself into any type of open, loving, productive human being. Throughout the book I found myself alternating between disgust and pity for Silver, and then I ended up crying for almost an hour straight while reading the last hundred pages or so. Silver did a great job of ruining his life and his relationships, but damn did I end up rooting for him. There is something to be said of a redemption arc that never quite comes to fruition the way you want it to - an ending that doesn’t quite leave you fully satisfied. Maybe I saw in him a little bit of my dad, a little bit of my ex, and a little bit of me, but for whatever reason this book hit me and hit me hard. A beautiful, poignant story about the chaos that comes with family and the messiness that is love.
