Women and Other Monsters: Building a New Mythology by Jess Zimmerman

emotional informative reflective slow-paced

3.0

I liked what I learned in this book. I had never heard the mythology stories that are retold in this book. And I certainly have never had the ability or knowledge to reflect on the female point of view for these stories.
I feel like the general idea behind the book is excellent. How can we connect these stories of women's treatment to today and to the history of women's subjugation to men? Unfortunately I felt a bit of whiplash with the format of the book.
As other reviews stated this book is part memoir and part a reflection of Greek mythology. The switch between the myths and the authors life were very jarring for me. I am grateful for her perspective and reflection. I feel I was able to learn and appreciate her personal story, but it would often come in the middle of retelling and reflecting on the Greek myths. I often found I wasn't ready to switch topics when the jump was made. I wanted more mythology or more memoir reflections.
Other all the book was enjoyable but it took my a long time to get through. In the end I'm not sure how to rate this because I liked it and didn't like it at the same time.
