So Not Ghoul by Karen Yin

dark lighthearted medium-paced

2.75

This is a great picture book to begin starting discussions about cultural appropriation, especially around Halloween costumes. Mimi is a Chinese American ghost and she doesn't feel like she fits in with the other ghosts at her school when she haunts in her traditional ghostly outfit. So she tries some other options, which don't turn out well. Then, one of the ghosts who makes fun of her steals her outfit, which creates an outburst from Mimi before the resolution of the story. I would say this is a medium length book based on words--there are several sentences per page. While this could be used with children of all ages, I think it would elicit the best discussions with 3rd-6th graders.
