The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain

4.0

I read this one for book club and really enjoyed it. While it is not exactly a mystery in the 'whodunnit' style, there is definitely an air of mystery to the story. There are a few things you know from the the prologue. Riley has grown-up believing her older sister killed herself after shooting a man. The synopsis tells us that sister Lisa is still alive. What we don't know is where she is or why she killed. We find this out by the end of the story, and getting there is an entertaining story.
Some of the story is predictable—maybe. Why did Lisa kill? I guessed that right, but it was just one possible guess. I guessed some of the other outcomes, too, but those involve spoilers. There were enough 'red herrings' there to make me question some of my guesses, and to make me want to keep reading.
I did really enjoy the story, but there were a couple of loose ends for me. Though there was an epilogue with a happy ending, the happy ending was a little rushed and not terribly realistic. I'm not sure that the happy ending can stick. Among other things, Tom and Verniece just kind of disappeared from the story after and tense incident with Riley. I'm not sure they would really go away quietly, and they certainly had the capability to destroy the happy ending.

Despite the loose ends, I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to discussing it with my book club. If you are looking for a quick read with discussion value, take a look at The Silent Sister!
