The Boy by Tami Hoag

3.0

I enjoyed this book but had enough issues with it not to give it more than 3 stars.

I didn’t like the detective, Nick Fourcade. His heart was in the right place but he had glorious anger management issues. In what world would he not have been fired long ago? I did like his wife and I even liked Stokes.

A huge issue I had with this book is that the detectives, Annie and Nick, fell apart mentally from the first second of the case. I find it hard to believe that experienced detectives would do this. Any profession where you encounter bad things so often, you learn you can’t internalized so much or your fall apart over time. I know this is probably being picky, but I’m a nurse and their behavior annoyed me.

I usually stick to books around 400-500 pages because I find that usually anything longer means too much filler material that does nothing to advance the story. This book is guilty of this. I was hundreds of pages in before anything interesting happened to get the case going.

Shocker of an ending, which I enjoyed. Almost gave another star for that alone. However, the more I thought on it, the more I was like wow, that wrapped up nice and neat. Can’t say more due to spoilers but it really is crazy.
