Defend the Dawn by Brigid Kemmerer

5.0

Defend the Dawn by Brigid Kemmerer is another one of those books I will put in the pile that I wish I hadn't sat on for so long. This book was phenomenal.

The character development and world building in this book is absolutely amazing. You feel invested in the characters almost immediately. There's a few characters you flip-flop on from page to page whether you love them or hate them. And I personally love that kind of back-and-forth in a character. The premise of this book isn't exactly new to me as a reader. It centers around a world that is in a pandemic of sorts, where a certain plant is the remedy for the illness. But of course the wealthy and elite control the production of this plant, leaving those who are most vulnerable and poorer to suffer without. I have read this premise before but never with such. This book feels almost like a Robin Hood retelling. I'm not sure if it's meant to be or if that's just how I perceived it but it definitely hit that mark for me. I really loved watching the two main characters banter and grow in their development together.

I wish I had picked this book up months ago when I download it to my Kindle. It was extremely well written and I could not put it down. I stayed up till four in the morning to read this book. I immediately picked up the second book and continued. I give this book a solid 5/5 and I will recommend it to anyone looking for a wonderful fantasy story.
