The City and the Pillar by Gore Vidal

I thought it was ok, quite engaging and personally I was interested in Jim, the main character’s journey. Lots of misogyny and internalized homophobia, but I think that speaks to what was the popular theme in the 40s when it was written. Also I understand to get away from the sexual invert theory that everyone was imposing on homosexuals at the time, they went to the extreme and portrayed the ideal gay man as being extremely masculine. Still hated the ending nonetheless.
