It's been a while since I've read such an old-school epic/high fantasy book (I'm trying to read more of these this year). This kind of fantasy is how I got into the genre originally, and it's the foundation that inspires my writing. I really enjoyed this. It's written a little more in the omniscient style than I prefer - and by this I mean the narration is more like someone describing what's happening than getting real deep nuanced insight into the protagonist. Having said that, the epic nature of this world, and how intricately it is depicted by the authors is just brilliant. Mara is a protagnist you really want to root for, and the collection of side characters she amasses along the way are equally fun. I'm guessing if you're an old school epic fantasy fan, you've already read this book, but if not, I highly recommend it.
