This is a curious one. Rationally, I know the ambiguous ending works and can admire the densely packed prose, but for my own enjoyment, I just wanted answers! No loose ends! A quicker pace! And YET, I also woke up this morning thinking of the characters and California and the tension between individuals and society that Kleeman seems eager to explore, so even if it left me stressed, it also left me thinking...? Definitely a strange little thing of a book!
Graphic: Death, Forced institutionalization, Medical content, Dementia, and Fire/Fire injury
Moderate: Kidnapping and Alcohol
Minor: Abandonment
