Watercress by Andrea Wang

emotional reflective medium-paced

5.0

Tender and beautiful story where watercress is a vehicle to get to know more about this family and their history and culture. The main character is embarrassed when her parents stop by the road to pick watercress for their family table but learns about what her family has endured to be able to eat the bounty they picked. I remember my grandmother picking chestnuts on the road and commenting on various greens (secretly begging for her not to pick them, much like the character in this book).  I would have loved to read this story when I was a child, it would have made me feel connected and seen and understood. The illustrations were also beautiful.  So much heart in these few pages.
