Japanese Tales by Royall Tyler

5.0

To represent medieval Japan the author chooses a huge variety, both in style and characters. Nobles, farmers, demons, saints and spirits all collide in moral tales, Buddhist teachings, jokes, ghost stories etc. etc.

The translation is simple and honest, and the introduction gives an absolutely necessary context to a world very different from what exists today. All in all the brevity and changing nature of all these tales makes them very refreshing and engaging.

cracking read, very eccentric.
