I spotted this book because of its fantastic graphic cover. I didn’t pick it up immediately and after running into it again, I realized its popularity. That is to say, I went into it fairly blind.

I really really enjoyed the first 2/3 of the book. It’s very intricate and detailed about flushing these characters out and their dynamics. There are constantly little clues and callbacks throughout.

However, I had hit a naturally stopping point between chapters. There was something that needed to be resolved between the characters. I had thought this would be done with dialogue or emotion or some sort of gesture that would be meaningful in the context. However, the way this actually gets resolved comes out of left field in my opinion. Though there is a very short build up to it, I felt like it was an unnecessary and kind of meaningless twist. Maybe that was the intention. But it put me off for the last part of the book and felt quite unsatisfying, unrich, and undetailed compared to the beginning.
