Crimson Shore by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child

3.0

It is a curious thing - most curious, in fact, to have a character that is so well-loved, so, in fact, dear reader, so well-regarded (a "Marty Stu", if you will forgive the colloquialism), that so often plunges himself into dire peril. Even more curious is that this thin volume of the Pendergast series felt more like a light sketch than some of the richer entries into the series. I'd hoped that the small town and odd murders was going to be a welcome companion to Still Life With Crows (possibly my all-time favorite), but instead it appears to be a setup for another book (or books?) that will place the famous FBI Agent into even MORE peril. At this rate, I'm sure Pendergast has his very own X-File.

Still, a mediocre Pendergast book is still better than some of the strongest entries of other thriller writers. I just felt that the characters were not as present as in some of the past books.
