I thought this book sounded cool and the cover was gorgeous. But, I was not blown away by what was inside. I can see how other people like this book. Here are my main problems:
  • Iz and Warren were a bit unique as characters which was cool. It was nice to see characters in a strong marriage. But, their characterizations felt like they were told to me more than something I got to see. I did not connect to them as characters.
  • The worldbuilding had some interesting bits but wasn't explored enough for my taste. Because I didn't know much, many of the twists came from things I didn't know about the worldbuilding and thus didn't know were possible. So, there was no foreshadowing for the twists.
  • I was not engaged in the mystery. I don't care about the
    royal family.
    Also, clearly
the kid was going to be the king's. That was obvious and I saw that twist coming from a million miles away.
  • The main characters having a magical bag that can basically give them any artifact that could help with any problem seemed cheap to me.

So, I was sadly disappointed from this book. I do not see myself continuing with the series.
