The Attic Child by Lola Jaye

5.0

I ugly cried at the end. The story is told in 2 parallel perspectives. Dikembi and Lowra, both were trapped in the same attic decades apart, but are connected by a shared secret.

Dikembi, a 12 year Congolese boy a brought to London by Sir Richard Babbington. Sir Richard is a colonizer. He changes name to Celestine and gives him a life of privilege. Celestin having had the benefits of his privilege is unprepared for life as an African man after Sir Richard dies unexpectedly. He goes from a life of privilege to being a slave and forced to live in the attic.

Lowra, born into wealth and privilege, life changes when her father dies suddenly. She is then subjected to a life in the same attic where Celestine was lived.

This is my first book by this author and she definitely gave a beautiful voice to a lion.
