My Soul to Take by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir

3.0

I struggle a bit when investigators are not gloomy and troubled, thus I wasn't wild about book 1 as we were introduced to Thora an Icelandic lawyer who investigated a crime with a supernatural feel and a heavy hint of romance threaded through, plus plenty of positivity from the lead, and a hint of humour, not your average Scandi hero suited my normal grumpy heroes. However I decided to give book 2 a go. It was a better reading experience as I felt that I knew the character of Thora the lawyer a bit more and I continued to enjoy the slightly supernatural feel to the stories.
That being said at times the spookiness ,villains, and sleuthing did occasionally feel a bit amateur and when Thora's son , daughter and sons heavily pregnant teenage girlfriend unexpectedly arrive in the hotel car park in an old campervan I did wonder if it was going to be The Mystery Machine and Shaggy and Scooby were going to make an appearance to unmask the baddy.
Nevertheless an interesting plot set around an Icelandic hotel retreat where a grisly murder brings up ghosts of past horrors, plenty of plot twists , red herrings and the whiff of Nazism. Overall then an enjoyable read and I've already noticed book 3 in my local library so plan to read it after the Summer.
