A Caress of Twilight by Laurell K. Hamilton

5.0

The second book in the MERRY GENTRY series took what I love from the first book and amplified it. I am officially completely invested now!

My previous complaints about the first book lacking a plot (something I personally require as a reader, regardless of genre) were addressed! While they were mostly pushed to the background, there were some elements driving the story and I did feel like things were beginning to happen. I really wished the ending didn’t feel so rushed because it was thrilling, but I do understand that readers are here for the romance.

And what romances they are! All of the men, familiar and new, were given time to grow with Merry. Sometimes they acted childish or foolish, but that makes them more believable as people. I particularly enjoyed Rhys and Kitto, and hoped for more development of their relationship. Frost and Galen also had amazing scenes. Merry herself is growing into her power and I really enjoy how she handles the overwhelming power of the fey.

Despite the steam and the excellent dialogues, my favourite parts of this book were the world-building. I love how unique each fey is and how careful Merry has to be around them. They are beautiful and terrifying and I am enthralled by this world.

This is the book that has really made me eager to see what happens next. Fans of mature fey, sex positivity, and dangerous worlds will want this one!
