Calamity Jack by Shannon Hale, Dean Hale, Nathan Hale

3.0

This 2nd volume focuses more on Jack's story and background set in the modern yet chaotic East city of Shyport. A lot to take in, new plots, characters, some old venegances & enemies to defeat. All things packed up with action and awesome graphics.
One aapect I really liked is that Jack's family are from Indigenous roots. If Punzie is the enstranged ginger girl with green eyes & long red hair, Jackie is the mischevious yet up to no good brown boy with an "escape or die" haircut. The touches of their traditional outfits and family treasures warmed up my heart.
The Jackie in our story grew up with no papa, so one busy to make a living momma couldn't take in all his scheming and teenage rebellion. But we do see some character growth by the end of the story and a reedemabale mother-son relationship after he saves her once more from the evil giants. Saving your imprisoned mom seems like a good Friday night activity in this case.
I could say that this series has much much more potential than it actually has now. With a bit more plot and a pamper up session at the saloon, it could actually be at the level of a decent DC series. Sadly, it has only 2 volumes (one mom saved per volume, they only got 1 each you see..) but it could surely be developed into a longer series with the same characters.
So, I would say 3/5 stars for various reasons but mostly for the story, a kicking ass heroine and pixies maybe?
** Disclaimer: no mothers have been harmed in making of this series. Well, only a little maybe....
