Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

I really wanted to love this book. I had had rave reviews from a friend of mine who swore by it. The main character is not only a WOC, but of Native American origin. Awesome. Using actual native mythology and tying into paranormal fiction. Great. I'm on board.
But for all of that, I couldn't fully connect to Mercy. She's bad ass, and a good person, and has a cool aesthetic going for her, but I don't think the book ever got to the meat of her personality.
The plot wasn't bad, but I was still going 'meh' throughout. Her romantic relationship in this also progressed rather quickly...or happened much more off-page, which is refreshing, if that's the case, but I like my romance old-school: slow burning. I just didn't buy it.
My opinion might change if I read the next book, but I don't have plans to. All in all, I was hoping for more.
