I love Rick Mercer and I absolutely loved his first memoir, Talking to Canadians, and The Road Years is just as, if not more, delightful than the first round.
I highly recommend listening to the audiobook, if you can, of course. I mean, really, get your hands on this in any format that works best for you, but as an audiobook lover, it is such a delight to have an author narrate their own memoir. And who better to listen to than Canada’s own Rick Mercer?

Talking to Canadians was a bit of an autobiography. It started from Rick’s early life, and ended on the pivotal moment where he started the Rick Mercer Report. Thankfully The Road Years focuses entirely on his years at RMR. Unlike its predecessor that was arranged chronologically, with The Road Years, Rick divides this book into chapters focusing on different key moments he had with the show.
And let me tell you, this memoir is such a joy. It’s also a delight to be able to pause the memoir, pull up Youtube, and watch the exact segments that were mentioned in the book. As a RMR fan, it’s been such a wonderful blast to the past. From his different experiences with the various Prime Ministers, to being tasered, to dealing with his close friend Harry (.. spoilers), to the birth of his beautiful friendship with Jann Arden, his stories are honest, endearing, insightful, and often hilarious. This book takes you on a delightful romp all over Canada, and one of my favourite parts of this book is just the pure love and admiration that Rick has for Canada and being Canadian.
Absolutely loved this book. Highly recommend this to Canadians, non-Canadians, Rick fans, and Rick haters (.. do those exist??) It’s such a delightful dose of Canadiana.
