Orientalism by Edward W. Said

challenging informative reflective slow-paced

4.0

Very thorough, very comprehensive, and quite detailed in outlining the representation of the Orient and its field of discipline throughout the ages, alongside the impact of colonialism and the mentality it produced. It's really good! My only gripe is that the author did not include Latin America into his analysis, which is still as affected by colonialism. The language is quite dense and complicated. Took me a few tries to process it. I'd actually recommend this to everyone in the book community that's dominated by the West again (especially America). The biases and prejudices outlined in this book are present in half the YA books I've read *cough* Cassandra Clare, Roshani Chokshi, Sandhya Menon, Sarah J Maas etc. *cough* The standards are abysmally low, and the activism is performative. Again: highly recommended for everyone.
