We Have Been Harmonized: Life in China's Surveillance State by Kai Strittmatter

4.0

This is an important book for people to read, especially if they want to know about China, the Communist Party and the Chinese Community living in mainland China.

The author has lived in China and speaks from first hand experience. Even with that, I would take everything written here with a critical eye but also not be as naive about China as I was earlier.

The main things from the book:

1. The Communist Party is China.
2. Anyone who is anyone in China is a member of the Communist Party.
3. The Communist Party has implemented what I previously thought was fiction - total control of thought akin to George Orwell's 1984.
4. The Chinese society now is shaped by the Cultural Revolution and it makes them right wing and look out for themselves.
5. The Communist Party is co-opting religion and philosophy to control the people.

As I mentioned, this book is an eye opener for me and I'm a lot more critical when reading news about China.
