Crankee Doodle, by Tom Angleberger

3.0

Ever wonder what the famous “Yankee Doodle" song actually means? Well, you may find what you are looking for with this cute children’s book after you endure a bit…okay, a lot…of silliness between a pony and his rider.

That “Yankee Doodle" song is really catchy but it only came about after a pushy and well-intentioned pony poked and prodded his rider ceaselessly to go to town to shop for a feather to put in his hat…at least in Crankee Doodle. But Mr. Doodle will have nothing to do with his pony’s antics and suggestions. He does not like going to town and dealing with crowds and he does not even like his hat, so why buy a feather for it?

But who knows…maybe that clever pony will just wear Crankee Doodle down until he has no choice but to agree with everything his pony says!

With a historical note at the end that does not tell how the song came about because that knowledge has been lost, but does tell us what macaroni really means, Crankee Doodle was a silly and quick children’s book that was nice to read for the holiday.

Recommended for readers five and up.

Rating rounded up from 2.5 because I do not have half-ratings.
