Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

4.0

I started reading this book on May 25, 2020, and finished it today: December 12, 2021. Egads! Was not an easy book for me to read. The language is dense. For example, “But no such happy marriage could now teach the admiring multitude what connubial felicity really was.”

Say what now???

Austen was intelligent, no doubt about it. She is witty and some parts of this book were delightful. I was told that I should be reading aloud for 10-15 minutes a day as one’s brain engages in a radically different way than when reading silent. I can attest that this is so! I can also attest that this book may not be the way to go when starting such a project! It was incredibly difficult going through it that way. I had to re-read multiple passages aloud to fully comprehend her words.

I am not swearing Austen off forever, but Emma will have to wait a year before I try again. And no, I won’t be attempting to read any more Austen out loud. Am thinking of picking up something easier this time around until I get better at it. Where are my copies of Nancy Drew?! : )
