The Dark Remains by Ian Rankin

4.0

New to me, McIlvanney was a highly respected Scottish crime writer who is said to have changed the face of crime fiction, and been the father of 'Tartan noir'.
He died in 2015, leaving amongst his papers the manuscript for a prequel to his first "Laidlaw" novel. Rankin has stepped up and finished the novel admirably. I'm often a little sceptical about living authors who tidy up unfinished manuscripts from late authors, but Rankin has done McIlvanney proud - I'll absolutely be hunting down his other works.
