The Whisper Man by Alex North

4.0

I have been wanting to read this book for so long and I finally got my hands on it at the charity shop for £2! What a bargain. I've heard such amazing things about Alex North and this book so I couldn't resist reading this.

Plot:
Tom Kennedy and his young son, Jake, moves to new house in a new town for a fresh start. Little do they know, a serial killer murdered five residents of the town twenty years ago named "The Whisper Man." Strange goings on start happening in the town and children begin to disappear one by one and when Tom's son is targeted they have no choice but to get detective Pete Willis involved to track down the killer. Clues begin to surface as everyone gets closer to the truth and with little whispers being heard at Jake's window...The Whisper Man haunts.

Writing:
The writing in this book was so eerie and creepy. It was a masterful way to create suspense and build up the tension. I love these types of books so much, the writing really sets the scene and makes you feel like you are in the story. The whispers at the window, the children disappearing, the knocking in the house. I can't describe how creepy this one was to read during the night. Here's some advice: don't read it alone when it's dark.

The build up of the story was exactly the right pace. The breakthroughs in the case came just at the right times and the twists were unexpected but not over the top. My mind always goes back to Criminal Minds when I read books like this and with it being one of my favourite shows, I always instantly love the book and the story. It definitely lived up to the expectations I had.

Summary:
If you love a criminally psychological thriller, this is a book for you. It has all the elements of a perfect thriller and the horror aspect fit in really well. It was a great mix of both the tense crime solving and the creepy tension - North has a great way of writing the two together. I just had to pick up his other book straight after reading this one and I can't wait to sink my teeth into it.
