The Risk by S.T. Abby

4.0

Lana is a serial killer acting out a years-long plan for revenge against a group of men who destroyed her life. Logan is an FBI profiler working her case. When the pair meet, their attraction is instant - but Logan has no idea who Lana really is, and she’s determined to keep it that way.

I enjoyed reading this. It’s short and super easy to read - the writing is quite simple but very engaging. It covers a lot of very grim and dark topics, so this isn’t for the fainthearted, but S. T. Abby manages to do it with a surprisingly light tone that makes it quite exciting to read. The external plot involving Lana’s revenge plot and Logan’s FBI work is very well-constructed with a few twists, and the ending was quite exciting.

I will say I struggled to connect to either Lana or Logan; it felt a bit superficial at times, but their romance had good chemistry and I was pleasantly surprised by how sweet and gentle their relationship was in contrast to everything else going on in the book. Overall it was a good read and I’m looking forward to diving into the next one. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a dark romance with a serial killer heroine, but do check out the content warnings - it’s quite heavy.
