A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan
2.5
I genuinely wish that I could have enjoyed this more.
I think I am just burnt out on the patriarchy narrative.
This is essentially a fantasy novel written as if it is the Victorian era. The majority of the novel you deal with an ambitious woman who has to consistently manipulate her way through life for the absolute basic freedom of being able to read and study natural sciences.
This is a very common plot system, and as much as it can be enjoyable, it feels like almost every single fantasy book I read now.
I was hoping for something more whimsical and light-hearted, but was unfortunately pulled back into reality more often than not.
It's not to say this book can't be enjoyable, but so much of it felt recycled. The dragons and the concept of studying them scientifically was really such an amazing and new concept, but it was buried in the typical drama that is women being held down by male powers and preferences.
Not as much of an escapism book as I would have hoped.
