There are so many little details in book 1 that pay off here in book 2! I will be re-reading the series at some point as I’m sure there are more little things the author hinted at that I missed. 

The characters are broken - they have all made mistakes and survived traumas, but learn to rely on and support each other. This read -and these characters- are something special! Favorite read of the year so far!
