Secrets of the Sword I by Lindsay Buroker

3.0

Enjoyable--though it bothered me a lot, this time, how little Val seems like a mother. Amber has always seemed sort of tacked-on to provide Val a more diverse history than your standard supernatural romance/urban fantasy heroine, but I was hoping we'd eventually get more depth on that front. Nothing says Val has to be "motherly," per se, but I just still don't buy that she raised Amber up until four years old.

Otherwise, the story was decent, and Sarrlevi was an interesting addition. I was disappointed that Val's cut/infection got cured so easily because it seemed that storyline was going somewhere more significant, but maybe it'll feature in future volumes somehow.

I also wasn't fully pleased with how quickly Val went from "we're not ready to get married" to fully and confidently agreeing. Some more internal reflection would have been appreciated. The proposal itself was nice, though.
