The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner by Alan Sillitoe

3.0

The title has been stuck in my head since high school for some reason. I expected British Holden Caulfield and that's more or less what I got. I hate Holden Caulfield. I didn't hate this kid as much. I'm guessing this book is best read in its time. I didn't really sympathize with him too much. Empathize, sure. But as far as who he was and why he made the choices he did and all that, I couldn't help but think, "Whatever." That said, these stories are all pretty well written. I enjoyed reading them for the writing, if not for the bleak tone.
