The Charterhouse of Parma by Stendhal

3.0

This is something of an odd book. It was written incredibly quickly—over a period of about eight weeks—and so some of the plot elements are paced and introduced a little haphazardly, and the ending is more than a little rushed. Yet while it does have some events that have a tinge of nineteenth century melodrama to them, Stendhal's characters are written with a style, an irony and an observance that feels remarkably modern. It's definitely worth giving it a chance if you have a liking for early Victorian literature.
