The World Only Spins Forward: The Ascent of Angels in America by Isaac Butler, Dan Kois

emotional informative reflective medium-paced

5.0

A story that spans generations, calling forth the past, beckoning the future, melting down the present. I first read the two plays that make up "Angels in America" ("Millennium Approaches" and "Perestroika") when I was seventeen at a governor's honors program in Georgia and continue to recommend them to people. To read about the creation of these places, their productions, how they came to HBO, how it all came together, came apart, and arrived to the point over twenty-five years later, when I am reading it, eyeing my copies of the plays, is indescribable, transporting me, the reader, into the fantasia.
