Sweeper by Amy Daws

5.0

Sweeper is Amy Daws at her best, and I was really swept away with my love for this story. This story is chock full of all that I love about this series- the family, nuanced characters, personal growth, and the just right balance of heart, humor, and heat. Zander and Daphney were charming, and I simply adored their story.

Zander is a US soccer star, recruited to the epic Bethnal Green Football club, all while also learning the surprise of his parentage. Transplanted to London, he has a delightful meet cute with neighbor Daphney- they become friends and have this amazing connection, but Zander is still working through and figuring out a lot- and while Daphney initially seems like a great neighbors with benefits situation, real feelings come to play- and sparks fly.

Zander is so easy to fall in love with- I loved the complexity Amy brought to his story as his grapples with the earth shattering news that really causes him to grapple with everything he thought to be true about himself- and really challenging existential place to be when you’re also uprooting your entire life, pursuing your professional dreams, and moving to a whole new country. I found myself so easily falling for him. Of course, he’s dealing with some heavy stuff, but he also had me chuckling with his fish out of water type moments- both being a US transplant and him being so unfamiliar with having to actually pursue a girl. He’s sweet and sexy and so charming- SWOON. And Daphney is what I love most about Amy Daws heroines- she’s relatable, likable, incredibly endearing and admirable all at once. She’s had a painful relationship past, but she’s resilient and strong. She’s a hard worker and focused but also caring and kind- and she’s got a great sense of humor- especially when it comes razzing Zander.

Their chemistry is just delectable - so much witty banter, so many humorous moments, and some real heart felt ones too. We have just the right dash of angst, a little push-pull, but as always, the romance is mostly sweet and fun. The kind of butterfly inducing romance that will sweep you away in its charm and sincerity. You’ll swoon, you’ll laugh, you might even get a bit misty. And to top it all off, we’ve got the favorite Harris family characters swirling around providing that just-in-time touch to the plot. This entire series has such a beautiful family focus, but given Zander’s arc, the family theme shines even more brightly. Definitely a favorite in the series- and another sweet reprieve from the always swoon-inducing Amy Daws.
