Before I started reading this novel, my sister had told me that “this book feels like a much longer book than it really is.” She is right; I took weeks to get through the story, not because it was boring, or because it was difficult to read, but because I wanted to read every word on the page multiple times to really let the narrative sink in.

The characters felt so alive, so familiar, and I wept for them when they faced struggles, and I felt so much joy when they triumphed. This book took me weeks to get through because I was so emotionally invested that after particular passages I would feel so drained that I had to turn to other books or media to reset.

I had never read a book like this one before, that chronicles the lives of one family through decades and decades of history. I loved it and want to read more like it. My heart is heavy, I’m feeling emotional, and that’s all I have to say, I think.
