Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival, and Hope in an American City by Andrea Elliott

challenging dark emotional tense medium-paced

4.5

So good and so tough. Elliott did a really good job of creating the sense of waiting for the other shoe to drop and by the end I was sad not to be able to spend more time with this family. I think following one set of siblings and their parents, rather than several families (like in Eviction) was especially impactful. I just felt at times a little voyeuristic, and I wonder how the family’s feelings about the book have evolved or will evolve in the future. I think everyone should read it, but would that create an even weirder/more complicated experience for the family?
