Lady of the Lake by Andrzej Sapkowski

2.0

The story is just very all over the place. The climax in particular didn’t do much for me. Open endings should be written elegantly. This is one of those series where the open ending is so random that it doesn’t have that elegance.

Much of the writing (or translation?) unfortunately felt very contrived and pretentious, and that makes for a very ‘bumpy’ read. It’s one of those series where the content isn’t bad but the process of getting there is just so painful due to terrible writing. And that weighed heavily for me.

Not to say I didn’t appreciate anything about the Witcher books; they have some amazing characters and there’s great dry humor that comes across despite the bad translation. I simply loved the short story collections (Sword of Destiny and The Last Wish), which is why I expected to enjoy the main story just as much. But, especially from The Tower of Swallows onward, I’ve been underwhelmed.

I can only conclude that the game developers have turned an extremely cluttered book series into simply fantastic games.
