The Fortunes of Jaded Women by Carolyn Huynh

3.0

Immigration, family drama, multiple viewpoints

The Fortunes of Jaded Women follows multiple generations - 14 total perspectives - of a Vietnamese family of women now living in Orange County. In their tight-knit community of Little Saigon everyone knows that they are cursed with daughters and lives devoid of love and peace. The women in this story are passionate, chaotic, and opinionated, each having their own relationships and grudges.

When an annual trip to a psychic reveals that the coming year would bring a death, a marriage, and birth - but only if the family can reconcile - a grand plan for a reunion is set in motion and drama ensues. The daughters, mothers, and sisters begin to unravel years of prejudice, struggle, and love in this snarky but ultimately uplifting novel.

Now I love a story with shifting perspectives, but I have to say, I was overwhelmed by the number of characters. I had to bookmark the page of the family tree I was flipping to it so frequently.

I did, however, really enjoy the writing style. The Fortunes of Jaded Women is light, smart, a little snarky, and very good.
