This book is beautiful, bleak and doesn't feel like it really gets anywhere and that seems to be the point. It is a frustrating read in some ways because you want the characters to break out of their oppressive and grim lives, but you know or expect that they won't or can't. I finished reading it on the day that Trump was re-elected and the political messages of the book felt pertinent and depressing.
