TW: suicide

Once upon a time an adorable, serious-as-they-are Capricorn peered over at me and recommended to me “Consider the Lobster.”

I knew nothing of DFW, and read the collection of essays and enjoyed the early 2000s nostalgia.

It is striking to me — and I don’t think we talk about it enough — how we find out terrible news through a cursory Google search or an SMS message received. An Instagram post seen.

So, that’s how I found out DFW died by suicide. Which drew me to this book, written by his widow.

The book itself is beautiful — lush paper and I love the way she took his printed words and created art pieces. Some of the free verse stopped me in my tracks, an icy knife to the heart. Some of it I wondered where it was taking me. But overall, I very much enjoyed this book (as much as you can enjoy a book written by a grieving widow).

Recommended for art and free verse lovers, those affected by suicide and/or grief, and DFW fans.
