Windwitch by Susan Dennard

4.0

I really enjoyed this second installment in the series. Gone was the awkward introduction of the first novel. I fell right back into this story and these characters lives. Although there wasn't an awkwardness to the beginning, there was a very confusing prologue that had me second guessing what the hell was going on.

Although, to be honest, there were a lot of scenes that had me asking what the hell is going on.

This novel in still in Safi, Iseult, Merik, and Aeduan's point of views. Although, it has a larger focus on Merik's story; and, a fifth point of view is introduced, as we also see from Vivia's point of view. Merik was instantly my favorite character, so I really enjoyed focusing on his journey. He has a very dark journey in this book with a lot of uncertainties, which lends to an overall dark tone in this installment. I was incredibly invested and intrigued with his storyline. There was so many new aspects to the world and the witchery laid down in his story; however, we don't get a lot of answers or explanation. I cannot wait to see what else is involved in this storyline and how it could possibly tie into the rest of our cast. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the POV of Vivia. Being inside her head really softened her for me and made it easier to root for her and her kingdom. She is a young woman trapped by the expectations of men based on actions of her mother, and it was fascinating. She is also a part of the LGBTQ+ community and does have a romantic interest. I really hope we more of this developed in the next book because I was really pulling for this relationship (among like every other one obviously).

That was one thing I would have liked a little more of: romance. All our characters are in such problematic positions at the end of the first book, going into this one, that none of them really have time for a relationship. Two of the characters do embark on a journey together for most of the book, but it is definitely more of a partnership than a relationship (although I am still shipping them so hard!!!!). There was some great romance in the first book, and I would have liked just a pinch more here. There were definitely opportunities (and I respect Dennard's decision to keep it platonic - for the moment), I only hope that we see more in the next book. Give me more swoon-worthy scenes please!!!

The pace was a bit slower when compared to the first book, but I still really enjoyed it. This book had a lot of foundation and set-up for the rest of the series. It felt a little more foundational to me than the first book, but I didn't mind because I'm really excited about how all of this will tie into the overall story arc. There are much bigger fish to fry than what our characters keep getting thrown into, and I can't wait to see that flushed out more. I'm still very intrigued by Merik's journey. I want to see what comes of the events at the beginning of this book, since we haven't had answers yet. Also, I am way more curious about Aeduan's past. As the next book is titled Bloodwitch, I am sure we will have some insight into that. And, the Hell-Bards...what is going on with that?? Everything seems to tie back to the puppeteer and the Raider King and Weaverwitches (which, by the way, is what what I think the last book will be titled).

All in all, I really enjoyed this installment. I am having so much fun with this series and these characters.
