I can finally understand why this book causes so much strife and discourse between the fans of The Old Kingdom. It all has to do with the love interest and the lack of a plot, or the presence of a plot without really making it interesting? Choose what you will.
I think Nick and Lirael could have been adorable, if Nick wasn't such a dumbass. Every damn chapter that featured him was him playing some sort of fish out of water idiot. Which made me really think because I don't remember him being that much of a dumbass ... then again, I didn't see much of him so maybe I was spared from the dumbass moments? Anyway. When they were cute, they were cute, but then I was reminded of his entire character in this book and it ruined whatever I read.
The plot, when it was focused on, was interesting and one that I didn't see coming. Looking back on it, I didn't really see it coming at all and it's one of those plot lines that I feel that was pulled out of someone's ass. Yet, no matter how much it didn't work, I enjoyed it.
The book lacked the characters of the other books but when they finally made their appearance I was like, eh, too late.
Three stars is a bit too kind, but I was interested and I enjoyed the mess that I read.
