I knew that the point of Circe the novel was to provide a feminist retelling of the story of Circe the witch, but I did not know what specific thematic elements to expect. Through a feminist lens, Miller crafts an immensely compelling narrative about the corrupting nature of power and the beauty of mortality while constantly interrogating how gender complicates these themes and intersects with them. Miller does not sanitize the story of Circe, but rather explores the environmental and interpersonal reasons why a nymph, “least of the lesser goddesses,” would be attracted to the power and independence that comes from becoming a witch. As Circe grows in power, she too has to confront the corrupting force of her new dangerous abilities and increase impact on the world. The difference between her and the majority of the men in her life is that she continuously strives to take responsibility for her mistakes and to hold herself accountable.
On the more technical side, this book is a masterclass in pacing and world-building. Every major plot point seamlessly flows into the next, and each new adventure builds upon the previous thematic and narrative elements. I constantly wanted to know what would come next, even though I am well acquainted with the events that transpire in the mythic story of Circe. Circe’s island is a character in its own right, and I adored Miller’s descriptions of Helios’ obsidian palace beneath the earth. I was immensely satisfied with the ending and had that great experience of wishing that there was just a bit more story to be read, so that I wouldn’t have to leave this world or narrative just yet. If all the buzz around Circe has piqued your interest, then I can guarantee that the book will provide what you are hoping to find.
